Community Involvement

Construction organisations play a vital role in the development of local communities through sustained investment and development in the built environment. It is important we recognise how important our responsibilities are in carrying out this role and we continue to positively contribute by offering a firm, tangible commitment to social responsibility and ethical citizenship in the community.

We are committed to contributing to the economic well-being of the communities where we work through the employment of local people and suppliers wherever appropriate. We actively encourage our people to involve themselves in the local communities where they work, either through volunteer activities in local organisations and charities or by participating in local business groups and educational establishments in sharing knowledge and experience.

 What we said in 2007

    • We will encourage more employees to become involved in charitable activities
    • We will develop the individual performance appraisal system to incorporate aspects of social responsibility
    • We will increase uptake of Considerate Constructors Scheme
    • We will identify future projects to further help the disadvantaged into employment

 What we did in 2008

    • 597 (23% of the workforce) were involved in charitable activities, with days spent on activities almost doubling from 94 to 180
    • We have included a section on social responsibility in all of our performance appraisals
    • We registered more than twice the amount of sites to Considerate Constructors in 2008 than we did in 2007 (75 sites - up from 31 sites)
    • We formed a community involvement team to enable us to better identify projects to help the disadvantaged into employment

What we are doing in 2009

    • Form a Community Involvement team to develop and deploy a Community Investment strategy which will enable us to more closely align our efforts to the aims of the business and the expectations of our stakeholders
    • Continue to increase the number of our people involved in charitable activities and events
    • Work harder to promote the VINCI Foundation for the City, further encouraging our employees to identify projects which will help the disadvantaged into employment
    • Publish a new comprehensive section of our Intranet to provide sites with guidance on how to ensure a consistent and professional approach in the management of our operations in the community
