A80 Upgrade

Soil Engineering is involved in the specialist consolidation works currently underway to stabilise abandoned mine-workings prior to the construction of a new Scottish motorway. Work is being undertaken whilst maintaining four live traffic lanes within limited lane closures.

The site is manned by up to 24 direct employees of Soil Engineering which has deployed 4no Boart Longyear Deltabase 420 and 2no Deltabase 100 rotary percussive drilling rigs since work began in June this year.

Designed by consulting engineers Donaldson Associates and Scott Wilson, the consolidation works comprise the formation of some 1500 treatment holes (over 45,000 linear metres of drilling) by six rotary percussive rigs, as well as pressure grouting utilising c. 10,000 tonnes of cement/PFA grout to stabilise the abandoned mine-workings.
