Muse Developments in partnership with Doncaster Council have today announced plans for the next stage of construction at Doncaster’s Civic and Cultural Quarter – the New Performance Venue (NPV).
Work on this next stage of development will begin this month. The modern building, a key focal point of the £300 million Civic and Cultural Quarter will comprise: a 600 seat main auditorium, 200 seat/400 standing flexible performing space, drama studio, dance studio, education spaces, foyer, bar, box office, dressing rooms, circulation and ancillary spaces and a café. In addition to the NPV a large area of public realm will be created to complement the new building.
VINCI Construction UK, a national construction and facilities company, has successfully been awarded the build contract for the £20 million venue.
Muse Developments projects director, Michael Broadhead, said: “The Civic and Cultural quarter is really taking shape. This next piece in the puzzle - the NPV will put the culture into the Quarter, attracting top class performers and artists to Doncaster and providing public areas for visitors to enjoy.”
Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies, said: “This is an important milestone for the Civic and Cultural Quarter project. The new performance venue will be the cultural heartbeat of the development and promises to be another wonderful addition to Doncaster’s growing portfolio of attractions. The new venue is far more than a direct replacement of the Civic Theatre, it will offer something for everyone to take part in or enjoy. Doncaster has much to look forward to.”
Keith Shivers, regional director at VINCI Construction UK, said: “We are really excited to begin work on this great new performance venue in Doncaster. VINCI Construction UK is honoured to be able to play such a key role in the regeneration of the town centre – by building a brand new state-of-the-art performance space.”
Work continues at the council’s new civic offices and one-stop shop for customer services with construction due to be complete next year. Work is underway to create a quality civic square and the newly refurbished Civic Quarter Multi Storey Car Park (MSCP) will launch later this month providing state of the art parking facilities for visitors to the Waterdale area and town centre.
Arts Council England has provided £2.1m of National Lottery investment for the town’s NPV.
The CCQ project is supported financially by the European Union, as part of the European Regional Development Fund’s support for the region’s economic development through the Yorkshire and Humber ERDF Programme.
