New Churchfield Primary breaks ground

A ‘ground breaking’ ceremony on Friday, 8 July, marked the start of the year-long construction of Churchfield Primary School in Highbridge.

VINCI Construction UK Limited, with offices in the South West, was awarded the £4.6million contract to construct the 14-classroom school that will accommodate 420 students last month.  Construction begins next week.  The new facilities will include an activity space, production kitchen and a hall.

Cllr John Osman, Somerset Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said:  “This new state-of-the-art, purpose-built primary school will bring huge advantages to the community, reinforcing the Council’s commitment to provide the best possible facilities and learning environment for our children in Somerset. We are pleased to have awarded the contract to VINCI Construction UK.”

Steve Vorres, Regional Director of VINCI Construction UK’s Building Division South West said:  “This new primary school is an excellent contribution to the educational success of our local school children.  VINCI Construction UK is delighted to be working on such an innovative project that will be of significant benefit to the community, and one that we know they will be extremely proud.”

Wendy Nelder, Head of Churchfield School said: “Both our staff and pupils are very excited that work is about to begin. While our temporary classrooms are working out fine, it will be great to have a new, modern school ready for the autumn term, 2012.
