The new £45m South Terminal security area, completed by VINCI Construction UK’s Air Division, has been opened by the Rt. Hon. Theresa Villiers, Minister of State for Transport.
The new facilities include 19 new security lanes which will benefit each passenger by reducing processing times to an estimated five minutes per passenger.
The large, high-tech security area is comprised of 15 standard lanes for passengers, two dedicated lanes for families with young children and passengers with reduced mobility and two lanes for premium travel.
The resulting impact of the new lanes combined with smarter scanning technology and automated processes will be a 25% reduction in time spent in the security area increasing passenger capacity at peak times to 250 passengers per hour.
Jason Griffiths, Operations Director at VINCI construction UK’s Air Division, said;
“We are delighted and proud to work on this prestigious Gatwick flagship project. The team have managed to deliver a quality product, amidst significant challenges, by working as an integrated team with the Client”
Raymond Melee, Director of Capital Projects, also commented on the project;
