Construction team at Gatwick Airport is credited for being exceptionally considerate

The construction team at Gatwick Airport’s South Terminal Pier 1 project has impressed an independent auditor from the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) for valuing their workforce, people’s safety and respecting the local community.

In a recent CCS report, the team from VINCI Construction UK had ticked all the boxes for being exceptional in safety with monthly fire drills, distributing induction booklets to all new operatives and holding regular meetings to discuss best practice and how to respond to unsafe situations.

The team was also commended for holding Reward and Recognition presentations to acknowledge ‘stand out’ work ethic and awards for subcontractors for best overall performance.

The site scored 90 percent in four out of the five categories; site appearance, respect for the community, securing people’s safety and valuing the workforce, giving a total of 44 points out of a possible 50.

Visiting on behalf of CCS, auditor Emma Hirst, said:

“It was a pleasure to observe so many industry best practices on the same site covering all elements of the scheme. Environmental management continues to be addressed with carbon footprint monitoring and waste minimisation targets monitored and openly displayed.

The community engagement activities are promoting a good culture of team spirit on site, and the site is clearly being professionally managed by the whole site team.”

Gatwick Airport Limited appointed VINCI Construction UK on the £85m, three phase scheme.

The project includes building new gate rooms, a baggage processing factory, and five new pier-served aircraft stands, all of which will revamp Pier One - one of Europe’s oldest aircraft stands which was built in the 1950s.
