Fairfield Halls has recently received a Highly Commended Civic Trust Award and has served Croydon as the principal cultural venue and community meeting place of the town for over 50 years.
VINCI Construction UK completed the refurbishment of Fairfield Halls as part of its £30m transformation into a modern performance venue. This project was the first stage of an ambitious regeneration of the area, to revitalise and reconnect this part of East Croydon with the rest of the town centre. The College Green scheme also included demolition of a MCSP to build 218 new homes, a new college, a 20,000ft2 art gallery, new shops and office space.
The project included refurbishment of an 1,800 seat concert hall, 800 seat Ashcroft Theatre and modernising of backstage areas. A multi-use rebuild of the Arnhem Gallery and a new glass clad cloister linking the public realm space and future proofed underground gallery is also included.
The first sectional completion saw the theatre and main concert hall handed over in good time for the grand opening, with a series of high-profile launch events.
The Halls provide a vital amenity for the local community and have been described by Mayor Sadiq Khan as ‘a cathedral of culture’.
Judges’ Comments: “The extent of work that has been done here to recapture the optimism of the original building is to be celebrated.”
