Work has been progressing well at our Surface Water Tunnelling Project in the heart of Chester City Centre. Two concrete access shafts have been completed, and a further two are underway. The first section of tunnel has also been completed, which is 115m in length and 1200mm in diameter. TBM “Emily” was launched into the Cheshire Sandstone formation deep beneath the city in Launch Shaft 3 and reappeared on Friday 30 April, precisely on programme after breaking through into Reception Shaft 2.
“The drive progressed very smoothly, and despite being launched a couple of days later than planned it made better than planned progress, to make back the lost time. The power cables, and slurry lines are now being stripped out of the finished tunnel, and final grouting is being carried out. The TBM is now on the surface being prepped to start the next drive later this month“
The next drive is the longest section at 190m and is due to complete at the end of June.
Our second TBM, named “Clare”, is due to commence tunnelling in May, which is slightly smaller at 1000mm diameter.
